I’m also going to discuss the behind the scenes story about the making of the video. If you think My Universe music video looks like a science fiction movie, you are correct. Chris Martin and director Dave Meyers’ vision for “My Universe” was a science fiction story set in a time of isolation, where music serves as a unifying factor. It’s the story of three bands jamming on separate planets, attempting to transmit their music throughout the galaxy. Speaking of the video director, Dave Meyers is one of the most famous directors in the industry. His long list of clients includes Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Ed Sheeran and many more. Previously some of his works also won the Grammy. So no wonder the result is spectacular and looks like a million dollar movie. If you think the shooting was done in Hollywood because it looks like a movie, you are wrong. The ambitious and complex video was shot in Barcelona, Spain with some additional footage taken in Seoul, Korea. The production process was around 5 weeks but the BTS part was only shot on the 3rd week as they are waiting for the Coldplay parts to be completed. This is intended so when the video is edited, the hologram interaction will look more realistic. The scene where Coldplay is performing on a strange planet is apparently taken in an abandoned swimming pool that has been left for decades. Interestingly, the local municipalities let the production team do whatever they want to the venue, including doing graffities and building structures on it. This is because the pool is scheduled to be demolished anyway. But I wonder whether the town council will instead make the venue a tourist attraction, because some fans might want to visit it now as BTS used it in one of their videos. Throughout this video, there are hidden details that can have deep meanings. For example, in the galaxy scene shown in the video opening, if you look carefully to the right, there’s an infinity logo that BTS used before to symbolize their 8th anniversary. A closer look reveals a spaceship made from mismatched slabs of metal-like patchwork, overlaid with graphics and odd markings. The design of the spaceship evolved to feature a heart-shaped window—a nod to the non profit organization called Love Button which is supported by Chris Martin. Meanwhile, the enemy called “the Silencer” has their own spaceship but its spiky surface was inspired by the shape of a Coronavirus. This is a nod to the frustration that after a couple of years, we are still in a pandemic. Covid-19 is limiting us from the life we used to have and even taken many lives. In another scene, we are shown a hologram of 3 bands. The idea would be to blend the music of three rebel bands: Coldplay, BTS and a third band called Supernova 7. Initially I thought it’s representing a real band, but apparently it’s completely fictitious, made up of six aliens and a robot drummer. In the My Universe music video, there’s a scene where BTS members are kneeling on one knee. This is an obvious reference to the Black Lives Matter. International audience might not immediately notice this and think it’s just a usual scene. But in the United States, kneeling on one knee is a signature Black Lives Matter move to demand racial justice and equality for the minorities. This support from BTS shouldn’t come as a surprise. Back in 2020, BTS donated 1 million dollars to the Black Lives Matter movement, and was quickly followed by their fans who raised another 1 million dollar for the same cause. It is quite bold for BTS to pose like this because in the United States itself, a NFL player named Colin Kaepernick was boycotted several years ago and not hired by any clubs until this day, simply because he kneels on one knee during the national anthem as a sign of solidarity to the African American community.
